The Story

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a well-worn example of a Federal Issue M-1861 .69 Caliber Ball Cartridge Box. This was the Cartridge Box issued to troops armed with Rifled .69 Caliber Rifles, such as the Rifled Model 1842 Springfield, etc. This is a fair but rough example, missing most of the closure tab, both Shoulder Sling Buckles, but it retains the matching original tins, the box plate, and its original leather thong.

This is a scarce cartridge box, in fact one of the harder Federal Issue Boxes to locate. The Outer flap has light surface wear with a broken latch tab that is attached by a row of stitching. The original closure tab is intact but broken, but the knob is still retained. Both Cartridge box strap buckles are gone, lost long ago. The interior flap is intact with side ears of the flap both intact, with a faint maker’s cartouche that we could not discern, a good research project. The Tool pouch is intact with a flap and closure tab. Leather shows signs of obvious age, very heavy flaking, and so on.

The original matching tins are present, The box plate is securely in place by the means of the original leather thong. The two loops for the shoulder belt are intact but without the buckles, one could not be attached.

This is an overall great example of a classic piece of Civil War equipage. Perfect for a collector looking to simply have a representative example, or an advanced collector!
