Original Item: Only One Available. This is an attractive but very stiff example of a Federal Issue M-1861 .69 Caliber Elongated Ball Cartridge Box. This was the Cartridge Box issued to troops armed with Rifled .69 Caliber Rifles, such as the Rifled Model 1842 Springfield, etc. This is a very good example of a scarce model of Cartridge Box, complete with Shoulder Sling Buckles and box plate with the original leather thong holding it in place, but the tins are unfortunately missing on this example. Just as well, the stiffness of the leather means that the front flap takes a good amount of force to lift.Â
This is a scarce cartridge box, in fact one of the harder Federal Issue Boxes to locate. The Outer flap has crazed surface wear with a latch tab that is attached by a row of stitching. The latch tab is unfortunately broken, but the knob is retained. Both Cartridge box strap buckles are intact and sewn securely in place. The interior flap is intact with side ears of the flap both intact. Tool pouch is intact with flap and closure tab. Leather shows signs of obvious age, flaking, and is extremely stiffened.
Both of the original tins are gone, but they were removed long ago as the flap will not even open near far enough to insert or remove them. The box plate is securely in place by the means of the original leather thong.
This is a great example of a classic piece of Civil War equipage. Perfect for a collector looking to simply have a representative example, or an advanced collector!
