The Story

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a fair example of the rarely seen U.S. Naval Cutlass, as used from 1860-1865. The boarding cutlass was derived from the French pattern of 1833, often referred to as a “cullere a pot,” or more commonly called the “soup ladle” weapon. It features all brass mounts and a leather-wrapped wooden sword grip. These were never bound in brass wire even though there are grooves.

The curved 26 inch blade's ricasso was originally marked on one side with the banner style address of Ames Manufacturing Co. in Chicopee, Massachusetts, but the markings have been completely scrubbed from the ricasso. However, as Ames were the only company to manufacture these cutlasses, we are certain they manufactured this one.

The blade is in fair shape overall and has signs of past oxidation being cleaned away, which is likely what got rid of the ricasso markings. There are no inspector’s markings we could find. The only marking on the entire sword we could find was a 2 stamped into the pommel housing.

The handle is in fair shape with some major loss of leather with the wood being revealed underneath.

Offered in fair but gorgeous condition, original Civil War Naval Cutlasses are getting harder and harder to find every year! Ready for further research and display!
