The Story

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a tremendous example of the rarely seen U.S. Naval Cutlass, as used from 1860-1865. The boarding cutlass was derived from the French pattern of 1833, often referred to as a “cullere a pot,” or more commonly called the “soup ladle” weapon. It features all brass mounts and a fantastically-retained wire-wrapped leather grip, indicative of issue to an officer. These almost never retain their wire, so this is a scarce offering.

The curved 26 inch blade's ricasso is marked on one side with the banner style address, which is mostly faint but still visible -

One the other side it is faintly marked with-

1862

The blade is in fair shape, however it has some heavy oxidation which has been cleaned in spots, but there are still some areas of heavy rusting. There are no extra inspector markings, but there is a serial number under the guard, 9M / 332, for 9,332, an early example!

The handle is in fantastic shape with some light wear and staining but nothing too serious. The wire is still complete and doesn’t appear loose anywhere that we can see. This very well may be the best grip we’ve ever seen on an M1860 Naval Cutlass.

Offered in fair but gorgeous condition, original Civil War Naval Cutlasses are getting harder and harder to find every year, especially with their wire wrap! Ready for further research and display!
