The Story
Original Item. Only One Available. This is a rare original "USN" marked Civil War navy percussion cap pouch. This one has the embossed "USN" that is clear as day on the outer flap. The front securing strap is unfortunately torn open, but the brass finial knob is still intact with heavy verdigris. One of the two belt loops has torn off of the top, and is close to tearing off of the bottom, but the other is in good order.
Lifting the top flap reveals a great inspector stamp reading:
A.D. LAIDLEY
U.S.
ORD. DEPT.
SUB INSPECTOR
Under this is the marking R NECE denoting manufacture by Reuben Nece. Nece started out as a tailor and apparently got into the accoutrement business through his brother, a saddler. He ended up with army contracts for many thousands of accoutrements and accoutrement sets, both infantry and cavalry, as well as horse equipment, etc.
There is no wool inside. A great Navy cap pouch, the first we have offered. Ready for further research and display.
