Original Item: Only One Available. This is an excellent example of an early Indian War Model 1872 U.S. Army Regulation Kepi likely worn by an enlisted infantryman. This U.S. Army Model 1872 Kepi features fabric of dark blue wool broadcloth, with a painted leather visor, with polished cotton lining in the crown. The crown stands 2 3/4" high at the front, 4 3/4" at the rear seam and the top is 4 1/2" in diameter. The body of the cap meets a band of wool seamed only at the back and stiffened with leather.
The original leather chinstrap is present, being secured on each side of the cap by a regulation Federal Eagle button. The visor shows heavy cracking and crazing in the leather but it is still solid.
The sweatband is entirely absent and the maker’s logo on the lining is far too worn to ever read. There is heavy moth nipping and staining across the exterior crown. The size is approximately 6 ¾.
