Original U.S. Indian Wars / Spanish-American War Unit-Marked M1878 Canteen with Leather Shoulder Strap - 65th Infantry Regiment, Company E - Puerto Rico Regiment

Original Item: Only One Available. US M1878 Canteen with a tan canvas cover with a very clear U.S. stencil on the front, in very good condition with the original issue sling. The front bears markings which we believe to denote Company E of the 65th Infantry Regiment, a good research opportunity.

The canteen is complete with its original cork stopper secured to the neck of the canteen by a brass ring and chain. The cork itself is complete but has shrunk due to age. It also has the proper pattern leather shoulder strap, of the later adjustable style in fair condition, but has dried out and heavy cracks and scaling are present in the finish, which is expected. There is a stamp in the strap reading ROCK ISLAND ARSENAL.

There is denting on the body, and the cover has the expected heavy stains and wear to the canvas. A great chance to pick up a good example of this iconic canteen!
