The Story

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice example of a well worn early American “Eagle Head” Militia Officers Sword with a partial correct leather scabbard. There are no maker’s markings present, and the etchings on the blade may indicate German manufacture.

This example does appear to be Mexican-American War era (1846-1848) used and is in great, field worn condition. The sword itself may actually date to the late 1820s / 1830s, but likely saw the most use during the Mexican-American War. The sword is all brass mounted with a standard "P" hand guard and a very nice closed beak Eagle pommel. The sword does show wear with the brass fittings being loose and the ivory like grip showing heavy wear with the wire wrap now entirely gone.

Overall it is 35 inches long, with a 30 inch long engraved single edge curved blade. Each side has a fuller towards the spine, with some light etching on the first 1/3 of the blade. The old inlay is still visible in places. There is also some light staining and heavy surface pitting on the last half of the blade, as well as near the cross guard, with some heavy nicks along the edge. The rain chape on one side has a great American eagle with shield, and the other side is blank.

The included partial leather scabbard now measures 21 ¼” and only retains the middle mount, which appears to be brass with one hanging ring. There is heavy cracking and loss of stitching, but you almost never see any of the scabbard retained on these early swords, making this a rare example.

A very well-worn Mexican-American War officer’s sword, ready for further research and display.

Approximate Dimensions:
Blade Length: 30"
Blade Style: Single Edged Curved Saber with Fuller
Overall length: 35“
Scabbard length: 21 1/4” (incomplete)
