The Story

Original Item: One-of-a-kind. In the early stages of the civil war, militias fought before standard Armies were formed. This was manufactured for use by Non-Commissioned Officers of the state militias, and was often referred to as a “Sergeants Sword”. As a whole, the sword and scabbard is in quite good condition for being almost two-hundred years old.

The brass crossguard and pommel with the “Knight’s Head” and floral motif show no extensive damage and have been tarnished due to age. The blade is believed to be an 1834 pattern with a double-edge. The steel still retains some of its original shine, with a good edge and point. The blade is marked at the ricasso with a “Walking Bear”, thought to be the mark of Solingen-maker Abraham Kuller Zu Wald. Wald exclusively sold to the North during the Civil War and produced swords from 1847-1880. The blade of this example is not etched.
The ribbed bone grip is well-retained without any serious damage and displays very elegantly.

The scabbard is in rough condition and is partial, only measuring 18¼”. The brass fitting has tarnished over the years and the leather shows heavy aging. There also appears to be an old repair.
Swords like this were used from the Mexican War through the Civil War. Comes ready for further research and display.
