The Story
Original Item. Only One Available. This is a stellar embossed brass powder flask manufactured by G. & J.W. Hawksley-Sheffield. George and John Williams, brothers are recorded as opening the company of G & JW Hawksley in the early 9th century, 1840. They did not make arms, but accouterments. Beyond this they specialized in gun powder flasks and silver flasks. This example appears to be missing the spring in the spout so there is no tension when pushing the lever, but it looks fine for display.
The flask is marked on the side of the spout G. & J.W. HAWKSLEY SHEFFIELD. The spout screws on and off perfectly with no issue. The cap was put on with 3 screws which are now missing, but we couldn’t get the cap off. This example dates to the Mexican-American War period, but was likely meant as a hunting flask given the depiction. This is a very unique design with a stag’s head on each side with oak leaves and acorns below them. A very beautiful flask that will fit well into any Mexican-American War, Civil War, or 19th Century firearm collection! The flask measures roughly 8 1/2” in length.
