The Story

Original Item. Only One Available. First seen in 1794, the "Eagle Pommel" swords were a fixture of the early years of the United States. At the time there were no standardized officer sword patterns, and it was mainly left up to the officer on the type of sword they wanted, as well as the level of craftsmanship.

This lovely example has a 29½ “ straight blade, with a single wide fuller on each side extending half way down the blade. The first half of the blade has some lovely gold-inlaid etchings of patriotic motifs, with the firebluing still partially retained. Like many early swords, there is no visible maker’s mark, but the marking may be under the guard, so one could take the sword apart to check. The blade definitely has some minor rust issues, which have degraded the finish a bit, but it is still quite attractive.

The sword has a basic P-Guard with a lovely cast eagle’s head pommel. The grip is a very attractive fluted bone with separate grips on each side divided by decorated brass panels.

This is a truly gorgeous and ornate Mexican-American War era Eagle Head Officer’s sword, ready for further research and display.

Approximate Dimensions:
Blade Length: 29½”
Blade Style: Straight Single Edged with Fuller
Overall Length: 34¼”
