The Story

Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This lovely stitched leather water bucket belonged to the Enoch Wheeler & Co. Company, which was likely an insurance company in Union, New Jersey. It was common for insurance companies to paint their information on these buckets which would have been used to put out fires in buildings insured by the company. We couldn’t find much in our research on Enoch Wheeler, but could find two men with similar names in a Union Fire Company roster from 1822, although we’re unsure if this correlates.

The bucket’s handle has come off, but it’s still fully intact in the bucket. One of the two metal loops which attached it to the bucket is gone. The bucket measures 11½” tall and 9” in diameter at the mouth. For its age, the bucket is in great condition. It is inscribed along the side:

ENOCH WHEELER & CO.
UNION

This is a great example, ready for further research and display!
