Original Items. Only One Lot Available. This is an extremely scarce lot of 18th century shot bags, two of which are affixed with “Irish Stoppers”, brass spouts with internal measurement capabilities. The bags are all of lovely construction with leather and corduroy bodies.
The rectangular bag is interestingly very stiff with a cork stopper. This is just from the leather stiffening over time, but it is very bloated. It measures roughly 7” long and has a leather strap which is a later addition.
The largest of the four actually retains some shot, which may be period. The body of the bag is quite stiff and deflated, with a wooden spout. The stopper of this example is also wood and appears original. It is 8¾” long.
The leather Irish Stopper example is deflated and very small, with a very small paper tag under the spout that has lost its writing. The Irish Stopper is quite an ingenious design for the time, requiring you to pull back the tab to pull out the stopper. Measures 6¼”.
The corduroy bag is a very lovely example, the first we’ve seen. It also has an Irish Stopper along with a material wrapped around the throat which we believe to be animal gut, a very interesting addition which further dates the piece to the late 18th century / early 19th century. It measures roughly 7”.
