The Story

Original Items. Only One Lot Available. This is an extremely scarce lot of 18th century shot bags, two of which still contain some shot, although it is likely modern shot. The bags are all of lovely construction with leather bodies. Two of the bags have gorgeous carved bone spouts with the third having a lovely wooden spout, with all three having their original wooden plugs. Two of the plugs have an interesting clothspin-style design, and all are of the period.

One of the bags is inscribed on the bone spout with 1809, dating the piece to the War of 1812 era. This example also appears to have some lovely period stitching repairs. This bag measures roughly 10” long including the plug. There is some cracking in the bone spout as shown.

The second bag is of a brown leather construction although the leather is heavily cracking and crazing. This example has a bone spout with a small wooden plug, and still contains a great deal of shot of varying sizes, filling 2/3rds of the bag. The shot in this bag could be original, but it’s very difficult to age. Measures 9¼” with the plug.

The final and largest shot bag measures roughly 12” long including the plug, which is 100% original to the bag with a small hole in the plug for a sort of lanyard. This bag contains shot of the same size which we are certain are modern. There are some lovely tassels around the top of the bag which really add character.

This is a tremendous lot of three shot bags from the era of the War of 1812, although the two undated examples could certainly be earlier. Comes ready for further research and display!
