The Story

Original Item: Only One Available. On November 16, 1907, the state of Oklahoma was officially welcomed into the United States of America as the 46th state. A little over four years later, on January 6, 1912, the states of New Mexico and Arizona also joined the union, resulting in the iconic 48-star flag that represented the nation during World War I, World War II, and the Korean War. It wasn’t until 1949 that Alaska was admitted as the 49th state.
This United States National Flag is an exceptional find, as it was only produced for a limited period of just over four years. The flag is in excellent condition, and its quality is evident from its displayable size of roughly 8 x 11 Feet, or 96 x 132”. Its vibrant colors and clear design make it an excellent addition to any collection.
The flag's body is composed of multiple pieces, each having been sewn together to form the flag. The blue canton, located in the top left corner of the flag, is adorned with 46 white stars. Upon closer inspection, the cloth material appears to be either cotton or linen. The white canvas header, which runs along the top of the flag, is in excellent condition and has a very lovely hanging system, with seven small metal rings stitched into the header which reinforce its strength. One of the two corner grommets is also missing. While the header is in good shape, there are minor stains on it that likely resulted from age as well as storage. There are markings at one end of the header, one diamond-shaped maker’s mark that appears to read SEARK(?), and a written inscription, Apgar Bros, which was the name of a trading company during this period, so it may have been flown at their office, a good research opportunity.
The flag exhibits heavy signs of age, and has a myriad of repairs and damage across the flag. There is a very large period repair to a gash in the canton. Some of the white stars have material loss in them. There are some tears along the edges as well. The expected toning due to aging is present, causing the white areas to exhibit a beige hue. This is a fine example of a well-preserved flag and would make a great display piece for anyone interested in historical flags.
