The Story
Original Item: Only One Available. Originally patented in 1858, the Remington Model 95 Pocket Pistol became very popular on the River Boats of the great Mississippi river beginning in the 1870's. They were often used by gamblers and others who would require protection on the often dark decks. Having just a 3" barrel and measuring 4 3/4” overall, this was ideal for a waistcoat pocket. The barrel top strap is marked with the Remington Address:
REMINGTON ARMS CO. ILION, N.Y.
The pistol is an excellent example, originally produced with a blued barrel and hardware fitted to a case-hardened frame, and the finish is still very well retained in many areas. Usually we see these "less fancy" unplated examples looking quite worn, but this example looks to have seen very little use, with the blued finish on the barrel very well retained, and the "niter blue" still present on many of the smaller components. There is even still a good amount of the case hardening on the frame! The original checkered "gutta percha" hard rubber grips are excellent, showing little to no wear or any kind.
A lever on the right of the pistol side releases the barrel, which flips upwards for extraction and reloading. There is even a nice manual extractor on the left side of the pistol, which is still fully functional. This also shows serial number 476 on the bottom of the barrel, which matches the number under the grips. The serial numbers on these restarted after the company was renamed "Remington Arms Co." in 1888, so this pistol was produced in approximately 1890. The hammer has a rather ingenious mechanism that moves the rimfire firing pin up and down alternately, so only one barrel fires at a time. It appears to function correctly, but we have not verified this. The bores are in excellent condition, showing crisp lands and grooves with a bright finish in both. There is just a bit of past fouling and oxidation in areas, indicating only light use.
Found in many, many Western Movies these have become an old CLASSIC OF THE AMERICAN WEST. In fantastic lightly used condition and ready to display!
