The Story

Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is an extraordinary example of an American Revolutionary War Dragoon saber with very lovely characteristics, including a wooden handle and a brass branch guard, which is very telling of the manufacture capabilities of the period. The blade is triple-fullered in a way very characteristic of this period.

The 34⅛” blade shows heavy oxidation and wear with some minor chipping to the edge of the blade. From the construction of this sword, we believe it to be of Revolutionary War or Federal period manufacture, so roughly from 1775-1795.

The brass guard has heavy wear and denting with a break in one of the branches as shown. There are holes to each side of the ricasso on the crossguard and this style appears a bit reminiscent of a stirrup guard of the period. We are not sure if the wooden grip is original or a replacement.

By 1778, there was an explosion of newly formed cavalry units fighting on both sides of the Revolutionary War. While the British and Loyalist light dragoons were largely armed with swords made by James Potter of New York City (see 2004-15), the Continental Army was left scrambling to equip their mounted troops with these necessary weapons. To fill the void, the Continental forces sought to have dragoon swords made, and turned to several small forges and local blacksmiths to have them made, which is likely what this example was.

This is a great example of a Revolutionary War Dragoon saber, with a fantastic look and great characteristics. Ready for further research and display.
