Original U.S. Spanish American War New York Infantry 1st Sergeant’s M1883 Sack Coat with NY Depot Inspection Stamp - Size 50

Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is a tremendous example of a Spanish-American War used M1883 sack coat, worn by a First Sergeant in a New York Volunteer Infantry Regiment. Finding any SAW uniform is difficult, but this is a very well-worn coat to the highest ranking enlisted man of his company!

The coat retains its five New York “Excelsior” buttons on the front, with three smaller buttons on each cuff. Some buttons are marked WAT. BUTTON CO. SNY and others are marked RIDABOCK & CO. There is a tag under the collar reading 50, for the size. The interior lining shows extreme service use with tearing in some of the lining. On the interior right shoulder is stamped 4UV O78 G, but we are unsure of what these markings mean. The interior left shoulder has a New York depot inspection stamp dated either 1888 or 1898.

The collar of this example is piped white, something we’ve never seen before! The interior pocket’s lining has torn, so it no longer works as a pocket.
