The Story

Original Item: Only One available. This is an excellent example of the classic Springfield trapdoor Cavalry Carbine, the weapon used by the troopers of the 7th Cavalry that met their fate at the Battle of Little Big Horn in 1876. The breech block is marked:

U.S.
MODEL
1873

Offered in very good condition is this trapdoor carbine is in .45-70 government caliber, with serial # 135722 stamped on the rear of the receiver. The carbine has overall good metal finish with all proofs still present. The serial number indicates production in 1878, unfortunately just a bit too late for Little Bighorn. It has the correct two part trigger guard, and standard siding sight of the model 1873. It does however have a "serrated" trigger, which was most likely installed at arsenal sometime.

The stock is in very good original condition, with a great color. It is still slightly proud over the lock plate, so it has not been reconditioned excessively. The bore shows clear lands and grooves, with a partly bright finish, and some oxidation in the grooves. The breech block extractor is present and functional, though we have not tested the ability to eject an actual spent cartridge. Another excellent and rarely seen feature on this example is the butt stock tool compartment, which is covered by a rotating door on the butt plate. This was used to store tools and the cleaning rod, definitely necessary on a carbine.

The butt plate is marked U.S. and the barrel band is U marked. Metal finish is a very nice, with a great faded plum color.  Center fire breechloader, .45 cal., single band, no sling swivels, and a standard rear ladder sight. Lock is marked with an eagle and U.S. / SPRINGFIELD, manufactured by Springfield Armory, Springfield Massachusetts. Additional marks of interest include inspectors' and proof marks around the breech end of the barrel: a V over a P over an eagle's head over another P on the left side just above the stock.

This is an excellent opportunity to pick up a very rare example of a Springfield Trapdoor Carbine in very good condition. Ready to display!
