The Story
Original Items. Only One Group Available. This is a very interesting pair of items having belonged to Marine Corps Sergeant George Dewey Hutcheson who was a member of the Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 361, Marine Attack Group 16, 1st Marine Air Wing. On September 1, 1969, he was a crew member of a Sikorsky Sea Stallion Cargo Helicopter (CH-53A) over Thua Thien, South Vietnam, when the aircraft crashed.
The banner appears to be a captured Buddhist piece which measures 36"L x 8”W, with writing on both sides in Chinese and then in Vietnamese. The Vietnamese side appears to read NAM MỞ BẢO THÁNG NHƯ LẠI which translates to NAM OPENS THE MONTHLY GUARANTEES AGAIN. The other side in Chinese appears to translate to Namo Ratnasambhava Tathagata. This piece requires more research. Each side has an interesting patch with a swas painted on, which appears to be the Buddhist symbol. One side is inscribed “SGT HUTCHESON”.
The included book “War-Material Presumably in Service in North Vietnam” shows weaponry used by the Vietcong with descriptions in English and Vietnamese so it could be used by the South Vietnamese as well. Measures 7 3/4"W x 5 1/2".
