The Story

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a United States Helicopter Flight Helmet type SPH-3B designed and made by Gentex. The helmet is in overall good service-worn condition with the liner, headset, visor, earphones, boom microphone, and attachment cords in the back, although all pieces show extreme wear. This example is in the less common white color, with orange stripes attached by the pilot. Even better, it is fitted with rare "double visors", having both clear and tinted visors installed, each controlled by a different knob on the top of the helmet.

There is some deterioration to the foam rubber components of the helmet, very common on older helmets due to the unstable rubber compounds used. There is a partially intact data label on the back of the helmet reading:

SIZE REGULAR
DSA 100-70-C-1188
GENTEX CORPORATION
CARBONDALE, PA

This indicates a manufacture date of 1970. Both sides of the helmet have an attached “1” on an orange circle background, likely denoting the unit, which we aren’t sure of. The earphones on the interior show very heavy wear, and the actual earphones inside are falling out, but retain their wiring.

The included oxygen mask was manufactured by Sierra Engineering Company, but we think this mask is incorrect for this helmet, as it does not have the proper posts for its attachment. It should still work for display on a mannequin head, but will take some jury-rigging.

The included carrying bag is in good condition and fits the set well.

A very worn but field-used helicopter helmet with an incorrect oxygen mask and bag. Ready for further research and display.
