The Story
Original Item. Only One Available. Here we have a stunning original Eagle-Headed U.S. Infantry Officer's saber from the War of 1812 period which retains its original brass-mounted leather scabbard, an extremely scarce feat! It features a lovely carved bone / ivory grip as well as a gold-inlaid fire-blued blade, which still looks just as astounding as the day it was made. The sword is all brass mounted with a "P" guard with a very nice "open beak" Eagle pommel.
The 30¾” blade of this example is nothing short of magnificent. Each side has a fuller towards the spine, with some great engraving on the first half of the blade, which is still all gold enhanced, especially on the ricasso. Also, the majority of the beautiful "fire blue" finish is present on the first half of the blade, something we rarely see! There is little wear, but the blue/purple color is still extremely well-retained for its age, and even has some lovely designs at the transition to bright steel.. The patriotic motifs are phenomenal, and the blade even retains the leather blade buffer, which is very weak.
The bone / ivory grip is in great condition with some minor cracking on one side. The eagle head and guard retain some of the original fire-gilting as well. The overall length of this example is 36⅜”.
The original brass-mounted leather scabbard is in fantastic condition for its age, measuring 30 ⅞”. The leather shows heavy crazing near the throat but is still solid overall, with all of the stitching still retained. The middle fitting is retained but is loose as they always are on these. Miraculously, one of the suspension rings still retains a small strap and buckle. The throat and drag fittings show heavy denting and tarnishing. Due to leather shrinkage, the scabbard doesn’t fit over the last ¼” of the blade, common to see with these.
An outstanding officer’s saber with its original leather scabbard, ready for further research and display.
Dimensions:
Blade length: 30 3/4”
Overall length: 36 3/8”
Scabbard length: 30 7/8”
