The Story

Original Item. Only One Available. This is a very nice War of 1812 era Infantry Officer’s sword with a broken 5-ball hilt & “Weeping Eagle” pommel, a feature frequently found on officer’s swords of this period. The blade has very well-retained patriotic etchings, with a great early Eagle “E Pluribus Unum” motif and a shield crossing a cannon on one side, and a lovely Phrygian cap and pike motif on the other. There is no maker’s mark, common for this period.

The guard is missing a large chunk broken off at one of the balls, but other than that, this is a great example. The one-piece wrap-around fluted ivory grip is indicative of early manufacture, so this very well may date to the War of 1812, but due to these designs being used for decades afterwards, we cannot say for sure.

The 31⅝” blade is in great order with light oxidation across. The etching is very well-preserved, and the blade buffer is still intact. The overall length is 36⅞”.

The original steel scabbard is in great shape with both suspension rings retained. It measures 32⅛”.

A very nice officer’s sword with some issues, but overall a well-preserved example. Comes ready to display!

Approximate Dimensions:
Blade Length: 31 5/8"
Overall length: 36 7/8”
Scabbard length: 32 1/8”
