The Story

Original Items. One-of-a-Kind Group. This is a lovely uniform & field gear grouping belonging to Major Otho A. Fiedler of Base Hospital 22. This hospital was organized in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in early 1918, leaving for France in June 1918. At its peak, the hospital had 5,100 beds.

The grouping includes:

- Fiedler’s officer’s uniform with bullion Major rank insignia on the shoulders and two overseas chevrons on the left cuff, with US and Medical collar insignia. The uniform was tailor-made by the Globe Tailoring Company in Milwaukee, and his initials, O.A.F., are monogrammed on the interior.
- Fiedler’s Sam Browne belt with attached M1911 holster which is dated 1917 by the Warren Leather Goods Co. The leather of the belt is cracking and crazing.
- US WWI Gas Mask bag, no mask, and no markings on the bag.
- U.S. M1917 Doughboy helmet with heat stamp YJ 148 indicating U.S. manufacture. Shell has a strange green paint applied, with full liner and chinstrap retained. Heavy oxidation to interior.
- Sword belt hanger for Sam Browne Belt.
- One single cavalry stirrup, stamped U.S. / A.B.
- Fiedler’s leather gaiters / leg wraps, good overall condition.
- An 8½ x 11” display board with Otho’s information as well as information about the unit in which he served.

This is a fantastic WWI grouping to a Major in Base Hospital 22, ready for further research and display!
