The Story

Original Item. Only One Available. Once the U.S. officially joined the war in April, 1917, recruitment of volunteers became a top priority in order to amass a sizable military force without the need for a draft. Although many minority organizations eventually embraced the war in hopes of making social, economic, and political gains through public displays of patriotism, the war was much more controversial than these images suggest.

This recruitment poster for the Navy depicts a young, white sailor holding a signal flag with a golden sky and several billowing ships in the background. The text above playfully connects to the image below by asking the viewer if they are “getting our country’s signal” much like the sailor persuaded to serve in the Navy who is himself signaling by utilizing the “wig-wag” flag system as a means to communicate with other boats.

This is a very early depiction of a sailor, and the artstyle is entirely evident of the First World War era. The poster was published by the American Lithographic Co., N.Y.

The poster has some visible flaws, such as tears along the edges and some wear overall, but the color of the poster is extremely well-retained, and given that it’s been professionally framed, it will remain in such condition for decades to come.

A very scarce poster, measuring in at 27 x 37½”, ready to mount and display!

The Navy League

The Navy League of the United States, commonly referred to as the Navy League, is a national association with nearly 50,000 members who advocate for a strong, credible United States Navy, United States Marine Corps, United States Coast Guard and U.S. Merchant Marine.

It was founded in 1902, at the suggestion of Theodore Roosevelt. The Navy League describes itself as "a civilian organization dedicated to the education of our citizens, including our elected officials, and the support of the men and women of the sea services and their families."
