The Story

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice U.S. Navy "Bell Crown" visor cap, intended to be worn by Officers for dress and parade occasions. The name comes from the pronounced flare out towards the top of the cap. This cap is winter weight, and is constructed of wool fabric stretched over a wicker inner frame. This style was worn by Navy Aviation Officers during World War I.

The cap features a tarred leather visor which shows “melting” as always happens with age to these. The gold tape chinstrap is held in by two gilt Navy buttons, all in good order. The bullion hat badge is attached to the hat band which does show heavy wear, along with some fraying to the bullion of the badge. The body of the cap also has some heavy fraying of the material to the sides and under the badge. There is also scattered mothing on the crown.

The sweatband is brown colored but is actually a thin oilcloth, still in good shape with some cracking and stitching loss, but there is still a size tag intact, 7 ⅛.

This is a gorgeous example. Navy Officer visors from the WWI period are incredibly difficult to find. Don’t miss out on this example. Ready for display!
