The Story

Original Item. Only One Available. The 3-inch/50-caliber gun (spoken "three-inch fifty-caliber") in United States naval gun terminology indicates the gun fired a projectile 3 inches (76 mm) in diameter, and the barrel was 50 calibers long (barrel length is 3 in Ă— 50 = 150 in or 3.8 m). Different guns (identified by Mark numbers) of this caliber were used by the U.S. Navy and U.S. Coast Guard from 1900 through to 1990 on a variety of combatant and transport ship classes. This round is completely inert, and cannot be converted to any type of explosive device. As with all deactivated ordnance, this item is not available for export.

This example has three holes stamped into the side of the casing and one near the base as part of the demilling process. The round measures 30¾” tall. The size of the projectile is stamped 47585-8. The bottom of the casing is marked:

T.B. & C.C.
8.8.17
LOT 166
3 IN. 50 CAL.
R.R.A. (ANCHOR) C.E.C.

A lovely example of a scarce round, ready for further research and display.
