The Story

Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. During World War I, the U.S. Public Health Service (PHS) supported the war effort by providing medical services, including operating hospitals, conducting research, and enforcing quarantines, while also playing a crucial role in sanitation and disease control in military camps.

Founded in 1798 within the Treasury Department, PHS carried out a variety of missions to promote the health and welfare of the nation. It conducted medical research, enforced quarantines to stem the outbreak of disease, and examined immigrants at their ports of entry, among other tasks. The agency also operated some 20 marine hospitals for the benefit of merchant seaman and Coast Guard personnel. When the United States entered the war in 1917, President Woodrow Wilson ordered all PHS hospital facilities to admit patients from the Army and Navy in locales lacking a military hospital. In addition, medical officers from the PHS were detailed to the military upon request of the service secretaries.

This is a very scarce uniform for a Captain in the Public Health Service. This captain appears to have modified his uniform have an open collar instead of the closed collar all men of the Army wore to this point. The jacket features buttons for the PHS, depicting a Naval Anchor crossed with a medical caduceus. In the pocket are his two PHS Officer’s collar insignia which he removed after modifying his collar. His cuffs and shoulder boards are correct piped with black.

Inside his pocket were his collar insignia and three overseas chevrons for 18-23 months overseas. There was also one of his buttons which is broken. The included breeches are in good condition without any serious condition issues. His uniform was tailor-made by the Greenwood-Atkinson Armstrong Company in Detroit, Michigan.

His M1912 Visor cap bears the correct cap insignia for the PHS, rare to find on its own. The cap is Size 7 and has a name tag inside for a K.A. Maxey, a good research project. The cap is also correctly black-piped with heavy wear overall.

A very scarce grouping to a Captain in the Public Health Service. Comes ready for further research and display.
