Original Item. Only One Available. This is an extraordinarily scarce offering for us at IMA, as this is the very first example of this iconic Marine Corps poster we have ever offered. Despite its rarity, it is instantly recognizable to any USMC collector, as it was used for the cover photo of Volume 1 of "Equipping the Corps” by Alec S. Tukloff, one of the quintessential Marine Corps reference books.
The poster measures a great displayable 23 x 35” and depicts a U.S. Marine in full kit with his P1912 Campaign Hat, cartridge belt with swivel holster, canteen, pouches, and brandishing an M1911 Colt pistol. The caption reads FIRST IN THE FIGHT - ALWAYS FAITHFUL - BE A U.S. MARINE! The artwork was done by James Montgomery Flagg, a famous American artist and illustrator. Flagg worked in media ranging from fine art painting, political cartooning, magazine illustrations, and United States military posters. He is best remembered for his political posters.
The poster is in great overall condition without any serious tearing we can see. However, there is some moderate staining to the poster, mostly towards the bottom, but thankfully this does not detract from the well-retained color and beauty of this iconic poster. There is some very light tearing along the bottom edge.
An outstanding and well-preserved example of what has become one of the most sought-after World War I recruitment posters, ready to frame and display!
Note: This poster will ship rolled.
