The Story
Original Item: Only One Available. This is a good United States Marine Corps “Forest Green” P1917 uniform jacket worn by a Corporal serving with the 4th Brigade, USMC under the 2nd Division. There is one overseas chevron on the left sleeve and one wound chevron on the right sleeve, so this Marine was likely a late replacement who was wounded during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive.
In the early 1900s, the Marine Corps added service uniforms for work and field use, replacing the “undress” uniform category used in the Civil War. The Marine Corps initially had both summer and winter service uniforms, but by the time the U.S. entered WWI, the Forest Green colored winter service uniform had become the standard field and combat uniform for both hot and cold climates.
This example shows good period wear with sweatstaining on the interior. There is no name we could find, but there is likely more research to be done. There are Corporal chevrons on each sleeve and there were never EGA Collar discs applied to the collar.
A lovely P1917 to a wounded marine, ready for further research and display!
