The Story

Original Item. Only One Available. The 1st Special Service Force was an elite American–Canadian commando unit in World War II, under the command of the United States Fifth Army. The unit was organized in 1942 and trained at Fort William Henry Harrison near Helena, Montana, in the United States. The Force served in the Aleutian Islands, and fought in Italy, and southern France before being disbanded in December 1944.

This is a very scarce V-Mail letter cover for soldiers of the 1st SSF. It is not filled out and is unissued. The cover depicts Santa Claus surrounded by Black Devils, one on skis, a group of 6 on a boat, several on landing craft, some in a tank, one on a parachute, one mountain climbing, and two with firearms drawn in defense. It is dated Christmas 1944. The bottom right reads U.S. GOVERNMENT PRINTING OFFICE: 1943 16-28143-4.

The cover measures 9¼ x 11” including the fold-piece on the right. This cover is in fantastic condition with just some light tearing along the edges. A fantastic & scarce piece of ephemera, ready for further research and display.
