The Story

Original Item. Only One Available. This is a lovely WWII enlisted uniform to a Staff Sergeant serving in Company L, 12th Infantry Regiment, 4th Infantry Division. The group includes the jacket, shirt, tien and trousers. The set is mostly unnamed, but with how specific the unit information is, you could certainly narrow it down to a few men.

The jacket bears a 4th ID patch on the left shoulder, Staff Sergeant chevrons on both sleeves, and two overseas stripes on the left cuff. There are great US 12 and Infantry Co. L collar discs, along with DI for the 12th Infantry Regiment on the collars, for some absolutely amazing unit specification. Over the left breast pocket is a three-place ribbon bar with the Purple Heart Medal, the Army Good Conduct Medal, and the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign medal with three campaign stars and an invasion arrowhead. There is a size stamp, 38L, on the lining.

The included shirt is in good shape as is the tie, and they make for a great torso mannequin display. The trousers match the shirt and have a great tag with a date, 6/43, and a name, M. Kahana, but we can’t say for certain that the trousers were always with the jacket. Makes for a good research project.

A great uniform set, ready for further research and display.

The 12th Infantry Regiment was reorganized as a motorized infantry regiment on 29 September 1942. Less than a year later, on 1 August 1943, the 12th was reorganized as a standard infantry regiment when the 4th Division was converted from motorized to dismounted infantry. The regiment along with the rest of the 4th Infantry Division arrived in England on 29 January 1944. On D-Day, 6 June 1944, the 12th Infantry saw its first action of the war when, as part of the 4th Infantry Division, it spearheaded the assault landing on Utah Beach under the command of Colonel Russell "Red" Reeder. Between 9 and 12 August 1944, the regiment helped defeat the Germans in Operation LĂĽttich. The regiment fought in five European campaigns through France, Belgium, Luxembourg and Germany. The 12th Infantry was awarded the Presidential Unit Citation for valor in action at Luxembourg during the Battle of the Bulge. The regiment was also awarded the Belgian Fourragere. After Germany's surrender, the 12th Infantry, along with the 4th Infantry Division, returned to the United States on 12 July 1945 and was inactivated 27 February 1946 at Camp Butner, North Carolina. During this time famed author J. D. Salinger served with the unit.
