Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is a very neat AAF send-home box lid from a box sent home by Staff Sergeant John G. Marlowe, 350th Bombardment Squadron, 100th Bombardment Group. The lid measures 11¾ x 16” and retains the original certification signature of his superior officer.
The lid has a small tag reading UNEXPOSED FILM which would suggest some of his bringback items were film reels. The lid is post-marked from:
S/SGT JOHN MARLOWE
350TH BOMB SQUADON
100TH BOMB GROUP
APO 559% POSTMASTER
NEW YORK, NEW YORK
And it is postmarked to:
MR. GENE MARLOWE
1000 RICHMOND RD.
LEXINGTON, KY.
The bottom left corner is signed by Robert K. Gilbert, 1st Lieutenant, Air Corps, certifying that the box contains no U.S. Government property.
We found online that Marlowe completed 25 bombing missions over Germany as an aerial gunner. A great opportunity for further research.
A great lid, perfect for display in an AAF collection.
