The Story
Original Item. Only One Available. This is a very scarce box of Motion Sickness Preventive pills. These packages were issued to the US pararoopers for the D-Day, Normandy Jump on 5 June 1944. They were used for airsickness as an experiment but failed and were never issued again.
The box measures 2 ½ x ⅝ x ⅞” and is designated:
SIX
MOTION SICKNESS PREVENTIVE
U.S. ARMY Item No. 12960
Lot No. 4415-348715Z
ELI LILLY AND COMPANY INDIANAPOLIS, U.S.A.
The original sleeve is intact inside, with none of the pills missing. Very rare to find complete like this.
Ready for display!
Just prior to boarding the C-47's Sky Trains that took the paratroopers of the 101st to their objectives in Normandy, the medics, under orders from the Regimental Surgeons, issued air sickness pills to them. These pills had a lot of unwanted side effects.
Never during paratrooper training in the United States or prior to jumps in England were these "Motion Sickness Preventive" pills issued to the paratroopers. The D-Day jump, the 101st's Baptism of Fire, would be the first time. And the last time. The pills had varying side effects a soldier under fire can do without.
