Original Items: Only One Set Available. This is a wonderful opportunity to pick up a nearly complete headgear set up for an Army Air Forces pilot from WWII! The United States Army Air Forces (USAAF or AAF) was the major land-based aerial warfare service component of the United States Army and de facto aerial warfare service branch of the United States during and immediately after World War II (1941–1945). It was created on 20 June 1941 as successor to the previous United States Army Air Corps and is the direct predecessor of the United States Air Force, today one of the six armed forces of the United States. The AAF was a component of the United States Army, which on 2 March 1942 was divided functionally by executive order into three autonomous forces: the Army Ground Forces, the United States Army Services of Supply (which in 1943 became the Army Service Forces), and the Army Air Forces. Each of these forces had a commanding general who reported directly to the Army Chief of Staff.
This Wonderful Set Consists of:
- WWII USAAF Leather flight helmet type A-11 made by the Swan Shoe Co. Size Small offered in fair condition with heavy wear and holes in the fabric. This one has some damage and is missing the headset. The hard plastic ear covers are marked as made by Firestone. It is not labeled A-11 but has the Specification 3189 which is correct for the A-11.Â
- WWII Army Air Forces Pioneer Scientific Corporation M-1944 Goggles. Good lenses. Goggles are in fair shape overall.
- WWII USAAF Oxygen Mask Type A-14 manufactured Dated 12-44 for December 1944 by Ohio Chemical Mfg. Co. in original box - Great shape overall. The set is still in the original plastic bag inside of the box. Outstanding. Size Medium.
- Original WWII throat mic in rough condition with tape covering the maker’s mark, and the electrical cord is heavily torn away at the connection point. Elastic is in good order but is weak.
A very good U.S. Army Air Force leather flying helmet set, ready for further research and display.
The Type A-11 intermediate flying helmet was standardized on August 6, 1943 and became one of the most popular and widely utilized helmets during World War II. There were numerous but minor changes relating to the oxygen mask attachments made during its production run but continued to keep the A-11 designation. The rubber earphone mountings were designated for the Type ANB-H-1 radio receiver. The helmet remained in Air Force service during the Korean War. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) continued to use the helmet in high altitude training through the mid-1970s.
