The Story

Original Items. Only One Lot Available. This is a great lot of WWII autographs including General Doolittle, Thomas Ferebee, and George Gay. Some fantastic research potential.

The lot includes:
- 7 1/2 x 9 3/4” portrait of Medal of Honor Recipient James Doolittle. His citation reads:
For conspicuous leadership above the call of duty, involving personal valor and intrepidity at an extreme hazard to life. With the apparent certainty of being forced to land in enemy territory or to perish at sea, Gen. Doolittle personally led a squadron of Army bombers, manned by volunteer crews, in a highly destructive raid on the Japanese mainland. This is a great portrait taken by Mutual of Omaha, with the back stating the photo was by Jim Sloan.
- 5 x 7” photograph of George Gay with the crew of Torpedo Squadron 8 before the Battle of Midway, signed by Gay. Of the 30 VT-8 aircrew from Hornet that participated in the pivotal Battle of Midway, Ensign Gay was the sole survivor. He received the Navy Cross for his actions.
- 4 x 6” photo of two men in front of the P-51D Mustang fighter “Saturday Night” signed by Crew Chief T/Sgt Jim Seibert and Walter Konantz of the 55th Fighter Group, 8th Air Force. Small bit torn off top right.
- 8 x 10” Photograph of the Enola Gay signed by Thomas Ferebee, Bombardier of the Enola Gay. Major Martin J. Douglas, Ferbee’s commanding officer, stated that Ferbee coined the phrase “DCAW,” meaning “Davie County Ass Whoopin’.” According to Douglas, “right as we got the all clear, I remember Ferbee shouting ‘DCAW’ just as he pushed the button to release the bomb”.

A great set of autographs, ready for further research and display!
