The Story

Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice “unissued” WWII U.S. Army M4 Carbine bayonet fighting knife, with an original updated M8 scabbard in the original box, with the original greasy paper still in the box and wrapped around part of the scabbard. Nicely marked U.S. M4 / UTICA on the blade side of hand guard for the Utica Cutlery Co., next to the U.S. Ordnance "Flaming Bomb". The blade is in fair condition, and was not used during the war, spending its life in this box. The crossguard, handle, and pommel are all tight to the blade. There is heavy cosmoline damage and wear to the grip and fittings.

The bayonet still has the original WWII issue leather washer grip, with very heavy damage from storage. These have not been changed out, and the leather in the grip shows heavy storage wear and staining. The pommel is held on by the correct peened over tang, which with the flaming bomb proves this is definitely a WWII example, and not a later reissue.

It comes in a nice WWII issue OD green thermoplastic impregnated cotton fabric M8 scabbard which is made by B.M. CO. It was updated during the war with canvas as most were. The scabbard is also offered in good unissued condition, but the canvas is bent and there is heavy oxidation on the metal fittings. The throat shows light wear to the finish with the wrapper still wrapped around it mostly. The canvas is in fair condition, and the snap still functions. The OD Green #7 color and lack of a bottom reinforcement indicates late WWII manufacture. The scabbard was manufactured by Beckwith Mfg Co., a division of Victory Plastics.

The box itself measures 13½ x 3 x 1¾” and is labeled on the top:
