The Story
Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is an outstanding example of a “Wade Flag” or “Wade Card” used by vehicles participating in Normandy Invasion and other amphibious beach landings. In preparation for amphibious landings vehicles were "waterproofed" These "Wade Flags" were shellacked to the windshield to insure that process was completed. There is a checklist under the flag for inspectors to fill out with the vehicle registration number, date, hour, and initials. On the backside facing the driver are instructions for "Before You Wade" and the "De-Waterproofing" afterwards.
This example is filled out, and is marked with No. 071315 at the top right. The bottom reads VEHICLE 4492580, INSPECTOR VW, DATE 6-6. This of course denotes June 6th, 1944. Nothing else is filled out. The flag measures 4 ⅛ x 8 ¼” and has heavy staining as shown. The reverse shows heavy dirt residue but retains most of the markings.
An extremely scarce example, the first we have ever offered! Ready for display!
