Original Item. Only One Available. This is a service-worn G-1 jacket worn by a member of Torpedo Squadron Two (VT-2). VT-2 reformed in 1943 with Avengers and shipped aboard Hornet from March 1944 to October 1944. The new Hornet (herself renamed after another recently lost carrier) and her reformed group saw heavy combat in 1944 from the Palau Islands, Wakde, Sawar, Sarmi, the dreaded Truk, Ponape, the 4 trips to Bonin Islands, Guam, the landings at Saipan, and finally the big landings in the Philippines, where she and companion carriers chalked up a kill on the Japanese aircraft carrier HiyĹŤ.
The jacket was worn during World War II and subsequently had the paint retouched after the war. The back of the jacket depicts the large squadron insignia of VT-2, a living bomb straddling a torpedo with his arms coming out of his mouth. To the right of the insignia are depictions of four boats sinking, and to the left of the insignia are 5 Japanese flags, one of which is a Rising Sun flag. Below the insignia is a single Ace of Spades playing card.
The leather is somewhat stiff, but not brittle, the knit cuffs and waist appear to have been replaced post-war, likely at the same time the paint was retouched. There is a tag under the collar, but it is far too worn to read most of it, and we could only really make out the maker, L.W. Foster Sportswear Co. Inc.
A very interesting painted G-1 jacket, ready for further research and display.
