Completing the set is the highly sought-after M4 mortar sight, housed in its original M14 carrying case—an exceptionally scarce accessory rarely found with complete assemblies.

This display mortar is in excellent overall condition and features numerous period markings for further research and study. The tube and base cup are entirely reproduction components and are permanently non-functional, incapable of firing a projectile. 

The assembly includes an original adjustable M5 bipod mount and an original base plate. The traverse and elevation (T&E) mechanism functions properly, and the leg angle adjustment operates correctly, though it can be slightly stiff at times—consistent with age and use.

The bipod exhibits multiple stamped markings, including a prominent “C” logo alongside part numbers C70411 and C70412, among others.

Historical Background

The U.S. M2 60mm mortar was developed as a lighter alternative to the heavier 81mm M1 mortar, intended to provide organic fire support at the infantry company level. Designed to bridge the gap between hand grenades and medium mortars, the M2 followed the standard mortar configuration of the era: a smoothbore tube mounted on a rectangular base plate and supported by a bipod with elevation and traverse controls.

The firing pin was fixed in the base cap of the tube, allowing the mortar to fire automatically when the round was dropped down the barrel. Despite being classified as a light mortar, the M2 offered substantial range compared to similar foreign designs and allowed for a high rate of fire by trained crews. The M2 saw extensive service with both the U.S. Army and U.S. Marine Corps throughout World War II.
