The Story
Original Item: Only One Available. Prior to WWII the standard vehicle first aid kit was called the Type D. The Motor Vehicle First Aid Kit (24 Unit) was very similar to the 12 unit kit, but in a larger chest and stocked with more supplies. The original stock number was 97771, then 9777100 with red caduceus on white circle cover markings similar to the 12 unit model. Later production bore stock number 9-221-100. This box has the stock number 9777100 painted on the cover. It measures 10" x 9 1/2" x 2 3/4".
None of the original units are intact, and the box is empty.
Overall condition is very good.
The transportable metal container (Item # 9777300) was usually stashed away in a holding bracket, centrally located under the vehicle’s dashboard (1/4-Ton Truck, aka Jeep). This rectangular shaped container was provided with a single carrying handle and closed with 2 sets of two clips. Its cover held a paper contents list, glued underneath the lid, illustrating where each unit should be placed in the container, as well as some directions and recommendations related to First-Aid treatment. The complete Kit’s Item No. changed from 97773 (between mid-1943 and early 1944) to 9777300 (after 1 March 1944). It once again changed in 1947, following the standardization of both Army and Navy Stock Numbers, to Stock No. 9-221-200 (Army-Navy Catalog of Medical Materiel – 1 July 1947) and further kept the same number in 1949 (Armed Services Catalog of Medical Materiel, 1 July 1949). Stock No. 9-221-200 was gradually phased out during the 1950s, and replaced by First Aid Kit, General Purpose, 12 Unit, now identified as FSN 6545-922-1200 (FSN: Federal Stock Number).
The original contents list is still present and able to be read easily on the inside of the lid, if you would want to add contents to the box. These kits all had the same contents packed in them at the factory but as with most equipment used during war time, they would be changed around and have items swapped to better suit the needs of a certain mission or theater. This example is empty.
A great set, ready for further research and display.
