The Story

Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. This is the uniform jacket & trousers of Private First Class William Francis Griffing, 4th Battalion, (155mm How), 13th Marines, 5th Marine Division. Griffing joined the Marine Corps on December 1st, 1941, and served in several different locations stateside before going overseas with the 40th Replacement draft in April 1945, soon after joining the 4th Battalion, 13th Marines, 5th Marine Division in the Pacific Theater. He then went into Japan for occupation duty.

The uniform jacket has a 5th Marine Division patch on the left shoulder and one service stripe on each cuff. There are EGA collar insignia and a 5-place ribbon bar over the left breast pocket, with the American Defense Medal, the American Campaign Medal, the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, the Asiatic Campaign Medal, and the WWII Victory Medal. We are not sure why he has the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal, so it may have been added. The name GRIFFING is written on the interior left sleeve over a College Hill Fashions maker mark.

The included trousers are in good order but are named to an E. Johnson on the interior.

This is a good 5th Marine Division uniform group, ready for further research and display.
