The Story
Original Item. Only One Available. This is a very nice early WWII white summer flight helmet worn by a Navy or Marine pilot in the early stages of the war, which has been modified to take a set of TH-37 Earphones, with an attached scarce set of AN-6530 goggles. The elastic strap of the goggles is stenciled J.E. ORWIG, identifying the set to U.S. Naval Reserve Ensign Joseph Earl Orwig, who trained as an Aviation Cadet in the Navy for several years before earning his wings and flying as an Ensign.
These early design helmets unfortunately did not have any provision for directly mounted headphones, which rapidly became a big shortcoming. However with the cloth helmets, this was easily remedied by making some holes, and mounting post production ear cups of various configurations. This helmet has had small snap-closed pouches installed on the outside of the helmet, which hold a set of TH-37 earphone receivers by Telephonics, which is marked on each side.
The helmet itself has no maker marks, but the snaps are marked UNITED CARR. The AN-6530 goggles show good service wear and are marked AN-6530 to the front.
A great named and identified WWII USN early war flight helmet set, ready for further research and display.
