The Story

Original Items: Only One Lot of 2 Available. A machete is a broad blade used either as an agricultural implement similar to an axe, or in combat like a long-bladed knife. The blade is typically 30 to 45 centimeters (12 to 18 in) long and usually under 3 millimeters (1⁄8 in) thick. In the Spanish language, the word is possibly a diminutive form of the word macho, which was used to refer to sledgehammers. Alternatively, its origin may be machaera, the name given by the Romans to the falcata. It is the origin of the English language equivalent term matchet, though it is less commonly used. In much of the English-speaking Caribbean, such as Jamaica, Barbados, Guyana, and Grenada and in Trinidad and Tobago, the term cutlass is used for these agricultural tools.

The Machetes In This Lot:
- 1945-Dated Disston Machete with 1942-dated sheath: In 1855, Disston became the first saw manufacturer to produce his own steel. This was the factor that made Disston the most successful saw manufacturer in the U.S. The Morrill Tariff Act of 1861 greatly increased the cost of imported steel, making it impossible for other saw makers to compete with Disston.

Disston accumulated huge profits by supplying steel products to the Union Army during the Civil War. This enabled him to invest in the factory, mechanizing much of the process of saw and tool making, lowering cost and increasing production. Some of the machines used in saw production and the manufacturing of files were unique to Disston. For over half a century, Disston was the leading manufacturer of saws in the world. A Time Magazine article claimed in 1940 that 75 percent of the handsaws sold in the U.S. were Disston.

The machete is in fair, service-used condition without any extensive damage present. There is some heavy staining and pitting to the blade and the wood grip scales are in good shape. The edge is still nice and sharp. The scabbard is worn but solid with faint 1942 markings.

- 1944-Dated Navy Mk. I Legitimus Collins & Co. Machete with heavily worn blade and USN Mk. 1 scabbard in worn condition. The covering material is heavily fraying, but still a solid example.

A nice pair of machetes, ready for further research and display.
