Original Item: Only One Available. This is a very nice example of a theater made M1905/1942 M1 Garand bayonet with a leather sheath! In 1943, the U.S. Army made the decision to shorten the M1905 bayonet's blade to 10 inches (25.4 cm) and as many of the M1905 and M1942 bayonets were recalled, their blades were cut down to size, and were reissued. These shortened M1905 bayonets were re-designated as M1905E1. The shortening of this blade continued, the soldier who was equipped with this bayonet wanted to be able to use this weapon as a regular fighting knife and shortened the blade, yet again, but now to 7 1/4 inches in length!
The blade and hilt appear to have been nickeled, with the blade now void of markings and showing heavy wear to the plating. The blade shows some period use, and has a small nick at the tip. The grip scales are also in very nice condition and a good amount of the original factory ribbed texture remains, but they were clearly removed and put back on when the bayonet was nickeled.
The sheath is a stitched and riveted leather example with a belt loop and securing snap. It measures 12 ⅜” including the belt loop and is in good shape with some loss of finish. The securing strap and snap are in good order though there is crazing to the leather.Â
This is a unique fighting knife in desirable condition. Comes ready for display!
Dimensions:
Blade Length: 7 1/4”
Blade Style: Single Edged With Fuller
Overall Length: 11 7/8”
Crossguard: 3 3/8"
Scabbard Length: 12 ⅜” including belt loop
