The Story

Original Items. One-of-a-Kind. The Battle of Peleliu, codenamed Operation Stalemate II by the US military, was fought between the United States and Japan during the Mariana and Palau Islands campaign of World War II, from 15 September to 27 November 1944, on the island of Peleliu. US Marines of the 1st Marine Division and then soldiers of the US Army's 81st Infantry Division fought to capture an airfield on the small coral island of Peleliu. The battle was part of a larger offensive campaign known as Operation Forager, which ran from June to November 1944 in the Pacific War.

This is a tremendous set of maps compiled by the 64th Engineer Topographical Battalion as part of the preparation & intelligence phase of the Battle of Peleliu. The set is named to a “H.A. Shiels” at the top of the first page. The set is stapled together at the top in six places. The entire set is folded in half, and consists of 15 different maps, some with fantastic annotations.

The maps include the “Anti-Shipping Sweep” map dated July 1944. There is a small handwritten chart with radio channels and corresponding frequencies. The second map is one of the best, a great air target map of Angaur island with fantastic annotations including “GEORGE HOUR 0830 FOX DAY 17 SEPT 1944 (TENTATIVE) ON SCHEDULE!” These maps were absolutely used in the planning of this now infamous battle.

The set unfolded measures roughly 15 x 15”. This is an unbelievable set worthy of further research. Some of the best maps are the “Plan A” and “Plan B” maps for the Air Anti-Submarine Patrol around the island. The set also comes with a separate 11¼ x 20” folded picture map “Haroekoe 1” Intelligence as at 25-FEB-44.

This is a tremendous map set for the Battle of Peleliu, ready for further research and display.
