The Story

Original Item. One-of-a-Kind. The Battle of Iwo Jima was fought in February and March, 1945 in the Volcano Islands (more broadly the Bonin Islands), about 750 miles (1,200 kilometers) south of Tokyo. The battle was fought entirely by the US Marines and Navy. Iwo Jima has the distinction of causing more casualties for the Americans than the Japanese. Iwo Jima has been immortalized as Joe Rosenthal took one of the most famous pictures in the history of the world, "Raising the Flag on Iwo Jima."

This is an outstanding map which was compiled by the 5th Engineer Battalion on November 30th, 1944, depicting the Traffic Circulation and Road Construction Plan on the Island of Iwo Jima while it was under Japanese control. The top right of the map shows that this was a copy furnished to the Fifth Marine Division in the Field at 1000 Hours on December 14th, 1944.

The map has a scale of 1:20,000 and shows honest service wear with heavy fold marking and some minor tearing along the edges. The top left reads:

TOP SECRET
CLASSIFICATION CHANGED TO
RESTRICTED IN COMBAT AREAS

The top right reads:

APPENDIX NO 2 TO ANNEX DOG
ADMINISTRATIVE ORDER 2-44 (ALTERNATE)
TRAFFIC CIRCULATION AND ROAD CONSTRUCTION PLAN

COPY NO. _
FIFTH MARINE DIVISION
IN THE FIELD
1000 DECEMBER 14, 1944

This is a really fantastic map furnished to the 5th Marine Division two months prior to the Battle of Iwo Jima. Comes ready to be framed and displayed!
