The Story

Original Item: Only One Available. The M33 Helmet (Elmetto Mod. 33 in Italian) is a steel combat helmet designed in the 1930s in Italy, and was the standard combat helmet of the Regio Esercito up to World War II, and of the Esercito Italiano well into the Cold War. Designed by Nicola Leszl for the Mussolini Government, these have become extremely hard to find on the collectors market today, especially WWII examples that have not been refurbished.

This is a very interesting example marked to the front with a naval anchor with a rope around it, for the Regia Marina, the Italian Navy. To the left of the helmet is a gorgeous shield insignia with three fish and a lightning bolt inside. This is hand-painted, and truly worth further research. There is heavy wear to the insignia, and we have been unable to identify it. There is heavy wear to the exterior paint.

The interior shows that the leather liner has very heavy cracking and wear, with some of the tongues having already disconnected. The leather chinstrap is still intact and is in better shape, thankfully. There is perforation in the liner for the size, but it is too worn away to see. The rear of the shell is stamped P1.

A very interesting Italian Navy helmet, ready for further research and display!
