The Story
Original Item: Only One Available. The M33 Helmet (Elmetto Mod. 33 in Italian) is a steel combat helmet designed in the 1930s in Italy, and was the standard combat helmet of the Regio Esercito up to World War II, and of the Esercito Italiano well into the Cold War. Designed by Nicola Leszl for the Mussolini Government, these have become extremely hard to find on the collectors market today, especially WWII examples that have not been refurbished.
This is a very interesting example marked to the front with a crown over a naval anchor with a rope around it, for the Regia Marina, the Italian Navy. To the left of the helmet is the painted coat of arms of the Italian city of Genoa, one of the primary Italian military harbors. There is heavy wear to the exterior paint.Â
The paint was examined under ultraviolet (black) light and showed no fluorescence, indicating that it is consistent with pre-1945 production.
The interior shows that the leather liner has heavy wear with some cracking. The leather chinstrap is still intact and is in better shape, thankfully. The rear of the shell is stamped P3.
A very interesting Italian Navy helmet, ready for further research and display!
