Original Item: Only One Available. This is both amazing and interesting. Manufactured during WW2 specifically to assist both Naval personnel and aircrews to identify U.S. WWII ships from a distance.
The set consists of roughly 42 ships, with many of them broken or missing. Some of the ships have come off of their small board, and others are broken entirely. Some of the ships include the USS Arkansas, USS Sangamon, USS Pennsylvania, New Mexico Class, USS Nevada, the USS New Orleans, the USS Wichita, the Pensacola class, the Porter Class, the Portland Class, and many more.Â
This set is contained in a wood chest measuring 27 x 5½ x 14 inches that opens like a book to display the individual slots each containing a U.S. model vessel. Each vessel is made from lead and most are marked with the ship's name or class on the bottom.
The original data plate reads:
5-A U.S. MINIATURE SHIP MODELS
SER. NO, 3380
CONTRACT NO. NOa(s)-2351
MFG. BY SOUTH SALEM STUDIOS
SOUTH SALEM, N.Y.
Not really appropriate for the bathtub as all are made from lead, but never-the-less this makes a wonderful display that is exceptionally rare.
Chest Closed: 27" x 5 1/2" x 14"
Chest Open: 54 1/4" x 2 3/4" x 14"
